Che on tha grill!

Living in Indy, it's hard to find anything to do. So, we've ( Jill, Che, Lisa, and I) come to use food as a pass time. Being vegan makes eating out a bit of a sport. I thought I may as well document it. :)

Update: Che and Lisa decided they were too cool to hang out with us and they have moved to Austin, TX so now it's just me and Jill and sometimes Shay.

We have some good places in town like Thai Garden, some great places like Udupi, Bucaa di Beppi, and some terrible places like Essential Edibles, referred to hence forth as Evil Edibles .

Bertolinis in Circle Center Mall.
Not too bad. They have some Angel Hair pasta and some spicey Penne. Oh, and there have a big ass Mediterano salad you can split with a buddy.

Buca di Beppo on Illinois across from TJ Max.
Another good italian spot in town is Buca di Beppo. The huge family style portions of salad, pasta and pizza are great! Don't touch the potatoes though. Even though Chad the waiter told us they were vegan they are actually chock full of butter and cheese!

Cheng Du is way the hell up north by St. Francis on 86th St. A lot of wheat gluten chicken analog stuff. Doesn't even remotely compare to Golden Garden down in Memphis, TN, but is a great place none the less.

Udupi on Lafayette Rd. Near Lafayette Square Mall.
This is probably my favorite place in town. All vegetarian (mostly vegan) South Indian food. Vegetable Uthupam, Masala Dosai, Vegetable Cutlet, Samosas, mmm mmm mmm! Udupi has gone through some weird changes lately. They have a lot of new workers and the atmosphere seems to have changed. I would still say this is the best Indian place in town!

India Palace is pretty good, but not 100% vegetarian like Udupi is. Lately we have forsaken Udupi in favor of baingen bartha from here.

India Garden on Illinois Ave. in downtown Indianapolis is pretty good. Gotta watch the bread because most of it seems to be cooked with butter. The baingen bartha sp? is really good, a little on the salty side, but I think it may be better at India Palace. The vegetable galfrezy is awesome. I don't know how long this place will last because it is right downtown and it has a lot of tables that would be tuff for most any restaurant to fill.

The Aristocrat on College Ave somewhere around 5Xth St.
Pretty entertaining on Saturday nights. You can listen to Hog-Eye Navy get funky with the sailor music. There ain't much in the way of vegan food though. It's an interesting mix of old couples and youngsters hanging out. You'll probably see pht there I bet.

El Rodeo on Highschool Rd, right at Crawfordsville Rd intersection has some good Mexican fare. Chalupas are pretty good. It's basically a bean tostada with lettuce, quacamole, and a tomato on top. Then there is the "special burrito" with lettuce and tomato. You can get this with bean instead of beef and they have no problem holding the queso on everything.
